LGBT Legal and Supportive Services

criminalizing homosexuality by country

ASC's LGBT services were launched to address the intersecting marginalization among LGBT African and Caribbean immigrants in a safe environment, and provide high-quality, pro-bono immigration legal services and mental health services in order to reduce isolation and build empowering networks. Through direct legal representation, ASC's LGBT services create a sustainable avenue for LGBT African and Caribbean immigrants to assert asylum claims based on sexual orientation and HIV/AIDS status. Furthermore, ASC offers a range of social and mental health services to reduce social isolation, moderate the effect of stressors on mental health, and build a safe environment that fosters mentorship and contributes to positive identity development.

Legal Representation and Supportive Services

ASC's LGBT services provide free direct legal representation to low-income LGBT African and Caribbean immigrants, including:

  • Affirmative and defensive asylum based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity persecution;
  • Marriage-based adjustment of status to Green Card holder for LGBT binational couples and families;
  • U Nonimmigrant Status petitions for victims of anti-LGBT biased crimes in the United States;
  • T Nonimmigrant Status petitions for victims of human trafficking; and
  • Removal defense for individuals in removal proceedings.
  • Culturally-sensitive and empowering support group for LGBT African and Caribbean immigrants, which provides a safe space to share, learn, and grow; one-on-one mental health counseling provided by ASC’s in-house therapist; case management and family support services.

Immigration Legal Services Consultation Fee Disclaimer

The $40 fee for initial consultation with a licensed attorney applies unless you are eligible for a grant-funded program. The initial consultation typically covers review of an individual’s current status in the United States and discussion of what options may be available to adjust the individual’s immigration status. Because ASC’s grant funding is subject to change, individuals interested in immigration services should call our office at (212) 222-3882 to determine eligibility.
