5.9.14 - African Services was featured in a new CDC report spotlighting our Hepatitis B program.
“[ASC’s] Community education efforts included outreach through mosques serving immigrants from Africa, visits to taxi garages to speak with drivers from West Africa, participating in French language ‘conference-call radio’ shows, and issuing radio public service announcements.”
2.11.14 - Tides Foundation Funding for ASC Ethiopia CDC Features
Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor advised fund managed by Tides Foundation, African Services Committee has received significant additional support for its general operating expenses in 2014, costs which include items such as management staffing, office rent, and utilities, including much higher heating bills this winter. These are costs to which many of our government grants don’t contribute their proportionate share, so surprise assistance from this donor through Tides is especially welcome.
10.2.13 - ASC Launches Active Living Poster Campaign
The African Services Nutrition Department has been working hard to develop materials that reach out to the African and Caribbean immigrant community as part of our Active Living Initiative (ALI). From exercise classes to healthy cooking seminars, they have been educating the community on how to live an active and healthy lifestyle. Check out their new promotional materials. These beautiful materials were created thanks to the generous support and creativity of Roselyn Hyde (Design), Devin Madden (Photos), Cherelle Rozie (Nutrition Intern) and under the guidance of Melissa Ip, our Food Pantry and Nutrition Program Manager.
The Active Living Initiative at African Services Committee is a part of a citywide initiative, The Partnership for a Healthier New York City, funded through a Community Transformation Grant (CTG) received by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai is the borough lead organization for the Partnership in Manhattan. Please visit and learn more at www.HealthierNYC.org.
9.25.13 - ASC Produces HIV Testing Video
In the African and Caribbean immigrant community, there are countless barriers to testing, treatment and care related to HIV and AIDS. African Services has recognized these barriers and challenges, and for many years has been working to educate the population and reduce HIV stigma -- around the disease itself and testing. The Office of Minority Health recognized these circumstances, and in 2012 ASC applied for a small grant to aid in the completion of a HIV testing video.
