Today, 1 in 20 New Yorkers is African born. They come from over 40 countries, speak dozens of languages and have brought a stunning cultural diversity to the U.S. Since the early 1980s, when the contemporary African migration to the U.S. began, African Services has welcomed thousands of newcomers from across the Diaspora, embracing their potential and providing a range of services that meet the changing needs of this growing, dynamic community. Our mission--to improve the health and self-sufficiency of new immigrants--has increased opportunities for newcomers and transformed thousands of lives. This is best illustrated through the stories of those we serve. They in turn become essential allies in our effort to enhance the quality of life in African communities through the fight against HIV.
