It is estimated that estimated that more than one million immigrants from Africa now live in the United States. According to data from the 2000 Census 2000, one in three African immigrants lives in the northeastern United States, and that New York City has the largest concentration of African newcomers. Based on broader community data, we estimated that nearly 450,000 African immigrants are living in the New York metropolitan area, making one of every 20 New Yorkers born in Africa.

Between 1990 and 2000, this community doubled in New York City, making the African-born population one of the fastest growing immigrant group in New York City. According to the 2000 U.S. Census the African community grew by 127% in the past decade.

African New Yorkers originate from more than 40 countries and speak many languages, contributing a stunning cultural diversity to the cit,. The largest communities in New York come from Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Mali; but no one group dominates this dynamic multi-ethnic mix.
