Since 2003, African Services Committee has provided HIV prevention education, counseling and testing, access to treatment, and care and support programs in Ethiopia. Today, we operate HIV clinics in Addis Ababa, Amhara and Oromia regions.
HIV Prevention Outreach
Through our HIV education and prevention outreach program, African Services has reached over 100,000 people with essential information on HIV/AIDS transmission, STIs and reproductive health. Our outreach team is in the community each day, conducting formal and informal educational sessions at open markets, cafes and bars, businesses, universities, garages and driving schools, police stations, parks, and the operational areas of commercial sex workers.
Referrals for free and confidential HIV testing has brought thousands of people, from all walks of life, to African Services clinics. With both knowledge and tangible solutions, individuals gain the ability to combat HIV transmission and reduce the effects of stigma.
Condom Distribution
African Services has distributed over one million condoms to date and is committed to increasing the availability of free contraceptives. All visitors to our clinics receive free condoms and each week, outreach workers distribute condoms to hundreds of commercial sex workers.
HIV Counseling & Testing
Since 2003, African Services has enabled over 100,000 people to learn their HIV status thorugh free, confidential, rapid HIV testing offered in the supportive environment of our community-based clinics.
Diagnosis & Referral to Care
Nearly 6,500 people have been diagnosed at African Services clinics HIV since 2003. These clients are referred for treatment at local hospitals and receive ongoing care and support at our clinics. Home-based care is provided by partner organizations.
CD4 Testing
African Services was the first Ethiopian NGO to offer CD4 testing in a community-based setting. We now provide free CD4 testing at all three of our clinics, helping evaluate disease progression and stage thousands of individuals for treatment.
Nutritional Supplements
Vitamin supplements are distributed monthly to our HIV positive pediatric, pregnant and lactating clients who struggle to obtain adequate nutrition to help boost the immune system and support effective ARV therapy.
Pediatric HIV/AIDS Case Management
Our comprehensive pediatric HIV care program provides HIV testing, diagnosis, referral to treatment and intensive case management. Families meet monthly with staff case managers to monitor their children's treatment and nutritional needs, treat opportunistic infections and provide counseling and support.
Reproductive Health & Family Planning
African Services has integrated reproductive health services into our HIV care programs. Staff nurses provide counseling and oral and injectible contraceptives, as well as referrals for antenatal care and pMTCT for pregnant women with HIV at local hospitals.
Practical Trainings for Community Health Workers
African Services offers practical trainings in HIV testing and couseling and has trained over 200 health workers to date.
