In 2003, we took our knowledge of HIV/AIDS care for African communities in New York City to the frontlines of the global pandemic. African Services now operates three community-based HIV clinics in Ethiopia. We have provided free HIV testing to over 80,000 people in that time and, among those who those who test at African Services, nearly 10% are diagnosed with HIV. Our clinics in the Addis Ababa, Kombolcha and Mekele provinces are located near the open-air markets that are the hub of Ethiopian cities and town. Working in the heart of the community enables us to aggressively reach out to underserved populations and engage those at most risk in HIV prevention, testing and care. Each week, African Services tests over 230 people, enabling them to take control of their health, acess treatment, and protect themselves and others. Our expansion into Ethiopia's rural areas is part of our committed effort to eliminate barriers to care by delivering HIV services directly to those who need them most. By providing HIV services that are entirely free and confidential, African Services has played an important role in changing how HIV care is approached in Ethiopia. We have helped to make real strides in normalizing HIV testing, coming to terms of the AIDS crisis in Ethiopia and easing the stigma associated with the virus, thereby improving the quality of life and health of everyone affected by HIV. |
