Marie
Lopy is a community health educator working with HIV positive
individuals to reduce onward transmission, assist with partner
notification, support treatment adherence and promote living positively
with HIV. She also supports the agency's HIV prevention programs
through multilingual condom promotion at the community level. Through
sex safe communication education and male and female condom
demonstrations, she trains hundreds of men and women each year in the
safe and effective use of barrier methods. Marie first joined African
Services to coordinate a domestic violence outreach and prevention
project and has also worked as an HIV pre- & post-test counselor,
hospital escort and medical interpreter. Previously, she worked with
NGOs in the area of sexual and reproductive health and at AVSC
International—now EngenderHealth—where she worked with the West
African-based, French-speaking program. Marie is a native of Senegal,
holds a first degree in biology and is fluent in French, Diola and
Wolof, in addition to English. Marie has also been involved as a
activist in the Senegalese community and has worked in community radio.
She looks forward to pursuing an MPH in the future.
